Burger Kings new plant based Whopper- not so vegan friendly? 🤔

Updated: Apr 17, 2020

There have been mixed reactions to the release of the new Whopper, which was promoted as a plant based alternative to the already existing meaty whopper. I for one saw this as a great thing, just like other chains that are predominantly meat based, it gives the vegan market an option and a change to show demand and possibly tip the balance of meat vs plant based alternatives. However the dark side of this release is the information provided from Burger King itself and other sources like PETA, which reveal the burger isn’t vegan friendly.

So unlike other chains where the foods is made separately and cooked on a different grill, this chain has revealed they are handled together throughout and as such contain meat juices. Now this isn’t a problem for meat eaters wanting to try plant based (although it’s not a true reflection of plant based if it’s been soaked in meat juices) as it’s great if Omnivores want to make a change and go with the plant based option and feedback from some vegans shows they’re still willing to eat it, but I imagine these people are vegan for different reasons than myself. Now I know the way they’re prepared, I won’t be trying one. Some people say they’ve had them made on a separate grill but the chain has stated they don’t have a designated grill so this isn’t 100% true. It’s up to everyone to make up their own mind on this but bear in mind employees have advised it’s not just at the grill that the food mixes with beef and chicken.

An article from The Independent:

Now as a vegan I avoid anything that’s been tested on animals. We all can’t be perfect and I’ve made mistakes on my vegan journey. But if you know all of this and still choose to buy this stuff, surely you’re not vegan for the animals. Like I said everyone has different reasons for being vegan and all of them have a positive impact on our existence, but this is definitely something to think about! 🌱💚
